Are we really surrounded by nature, or by a carefully constructed version of it? This is the question at the heart of Artificial Paradise, ¥ouada's new solo exhibition at Ota Fine Arts Shanghai. The Chinese artist transforms the gallery into a world of vivid, almost surreal colors, populated by zebras, alpacas, cows, and dogs that seem to have stepped out of a dream, yet quietly reveal the ambiguities of contemporary life. For years, ¥ouada has explored the boundary between what is authentic and what is artificial. Living in Hangzhou, he has observed how even the most natural landscapes are now shaped by human intervention, filtered imagery, and the aesthetics of social media. His paintings do not depict nature as it is, but as we increasingly perceive it: edited, constructed, and constantly reinvented. Beneath their playful appearance, the works offer a reflection on our desire for a flawless paradise. Even the gallery's display windows become part of the installation, drawing passersby into this space suspended between reality and fiction. Artificial Paradise captivates with its vibrant palette, but ultimately leaves visitors with a difficult question to ignore: how much of what we see is truly natural?
