How many versions of ourselves can exist within a single person? This question lies at the heart of Alter Ego, the new exhibition by Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude, an artist born and raised in Mbare, Harare's most challenging neighborhood in Zimbabwe. Growing up in an environment marked by hardship shaped his unique perspective, turning painting into a powerful way to explore the complexities of contemporary life with both irony and empathy. In his works, vibrant colours, dynamic figures and symbolic imagery come together to create narratives that move between reality and imagination. For this new series, Nyaude enters into a dialogue with GRAY, his alter ego, the imaginative child he once was, whose sense of freedom and possibility contrasts with the adult who must navigate responsibility, social expectations and the pressures of everyday life. The result is a body of work that is both emotionally charged and visually compelling, where autobiography and fiction blend seamlessly. These paintings explore identity, transformation and resilience, revealing how every experience reshapes who we become. Through a bold and energetic visual language, Nyaude invites viewers to reflect on a universal question: the ongoing conversation between the person we are today and the child we have never completely left behind.
