Considered one of the greatest artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, Edvard Munch produced a large collection of intimate portraits of family, friends, lovers, writers, artists, patrons and collectors throughout his life, as well as many self-portraits. This will be the first exhibition in the UK to focus on this important, but sometimes overlooked, aspect of the Norwegian artist's work. With energetic brushstrokes, bold colours and a direct sense of engagement with the subject, these works by Munch have had a strong influence on this genre of artistic expression. The exhibition will show how Munch painted portraits both on commission and for personal reasons.
