What happens when an industrial tool stops working and becomes a work of art? This is the question at the heart of Action, Matter, the exhibition by Cometabolism Studio at TANK Shanghai, the city's striking contemporary art space housed in former oil tanks. Founded by designer Zhang Ning and artist Yang Yafei, the duo explores the intersection of design, industry and sculpture, transforming industrial components into objects that invite viewers to see them in a new light. Factory tools, industrial materials and technologies such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence are reinterpreted through handcrafted interventions, creating works in which precision and imperfection coexist. The exhibition reflects on the relationship between the body, machines and matter, suggesting that production is not merely a technical process but also a human experience shaped by gestures, intuition and interaction. Freed from their original function, these objects reveal an unexpected poetic dimension, becoming sculptures that explore the ongoing dialogue between people and technology. In a city like Shanghai, a global symbol of innovation, Action, Matter offers a fresh perspective on the industrial world, demonstrating how even the most ordinary materials can become powerful tools for imagining new ways of looking at the present.
