Paper Is Not Just a Beginning

For centuries, works on paper have been regarded as the place of the sketch, the draft, the idea destined to be fully realised elsewhere. The Two Walks, the group exhibition at Carbon 12 in Dubai, overturns that assumption. Here, paper is not a provisional medium but an autonomous space for experimentation, capable of hosting complete works in which the intimacy of the artistic gesture becomes an essential part of the language itself. Curated by Judy Karkour, the exhibition brings together fourteen artists from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds, united by a shared interest in exploring the expressive possibilities of a medium often considered secondary. Drawings, collages, prints, watercolours and mixed-media works reveal how paper can transcend its apparent fragility, becoming a vehicle for conceptual, poetic and political inquiry. The title The Two Walks evokes the corridor through which souls travel between worlds, while also suggesting the many lives contained within a single individual and the possibility of resisting conformity. Within this metaphorical space, paper becomes a territory of freedom, allowing artists to give form to memories, thoughts and inner states without the mediation of more monumental materials. The works address a wide range of themes. Sarah Almehairi explores collage as a process of constructing and deconstructing systems; Faris Alshafar translates memories and sensory experiences into rhythmic marks and layered abstractions; Olaf Breuning brings his distinctive sense of humour to drawing, while André Butzer moves between abstraction and figuration in works of remarkable emotional intensity. Alongside them, other artists reflect on rapid urbanisation, environmental fragility, the memory of conflict, identity, and the relationship between the body and the landscape. Despite the diversity of approaches, a common thread runs through the exhibition. Together, the works demonstrate that paper is not merely a preliminary stage in artistic creation but a fully independent language, capable of expressing the complexity of contemporary experience with both delicacy and depth. It is precisely the apparent simplicity of the medium that allows for such a direct connection between the artist's gesture and the viewer's gaze.
