Borrowing from the concept of duration of the French philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson, the collective exhibition Duration: Chinese Art in Transformation offers 95 works by 91 Chinese artists. It is a journey to discover the evolution of contemporary Chinese art, a process open to aesthetic and conceptual metamorphoses and adverse to every type of stasis. The exhibition, which takes up all the spaces of the vast museum designed by the famed Chinese architect Zhu Pei, presents paintings, video works, installations, sculptures and multimedia works, rarely on display under the same roof. The five curators of the exhibition - Dong Bingfeng, Li Feng, Lu Mingjun, Colin Chinnery and Wang Min’an - divided the exhibition in as many sections, exploring the concepts of space/time and identity and the body but also daily life, matter, emotions and the performative nature of art. Among the artists invited to participate are Chen Danqing, Liu Xiaodong, Wang Gongxin, Yu Youhan, Zhang Peili and Feng Mengbo, as well as Cao Fei, Wang Guangle, Jia Aili, Liang Yuanwei and Li Ran, all of different generations and artistic approaches but who, in equal measure, have contributed to the vivacity and complexity of the system of Chinese art.
