The exhibition, organised in tandem by Tsinghua University Art Museum and Capital Museum, was conceived for the celebration of the hundreth anniversary of the founding of Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious in China and the world. The title Forests and Streams Resplendently Clear is an allusion to the poem of Xie Hun, Visiting the West Pond, which reveals the poetic meaning of the theme of the exhibition. Key leitmotif in the history of Chinese art, philosophy and thought, nature is conceived with holistic value, as if it were a singular place in which diverse creatures - human, animals, plants - live in unison, in a harmonious and complementary way, subject to the same laws and without any hierarchy. The anthropocentric vision is supplanted by a vision in which man and nature are moved by the same vital breath. Exceptional works by Li Gonglin and Su Shi along with various paintings from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, as well as the masterpieces of Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Qiu Ying, Dong Qichang, Chen Hongshou, Zhu Da, Shi Tao and other artists from the Ming and Qing Dynasties greet visitors, inviting them to rediscover a sense of cohesion with nature and the energy which pervades the cosmos.
