The Subtle Worlds of Gauri Gill

The Subtle Worlds of Gauri Gill
#Exhibitions

A collective exhibition, curated by the artist and photographer Gauri Gill, investigates the relationship between urban dynamism, the natural environment and the dimension of the sacred. In the exhibition Sheher, Prakriti, Devi, three Hindustani terms meaning city, nature and divinity respectively, the artworks of twelve artists who work in different contexts of urban, rural, domestic, community, public and immaterial spaces are displayed. The exhibition arises from Gill's ongoing documentation of urban and semi-urban spaces in India since 2003, to consider cities as living spaces shaped by multiple lifeworlds. Together with various professionals with whom she shares an affinity, the exhibition presents a world in which built and natural structures are made porous by termites, open gates on unfinished roads, historic ruins become homes for migratory birds while pigeons become occupants of postcolonial homes, locusts bear witness to contemporary terrors and forests manifest as spiritual sisters.
