What happens when love and identity collide with prejudice? La Cage aux Folles returns to Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet to tell, through feathers, sequins and laughter, the story of an unconventional family that becomes a universal mirror of social contradictions. From December 5, 2025 to January 10, 2026 a new French production, directed by Olivier Py, brings back to the stage the musical based on Jean Poiret’s play with book by Harvey Fierstein and music by Jerry Herman. In the role of Albin, also known as Zaza, is Laurent Lafitte. The plot remains faithful to the original: Georges runs a drag cabaret in Saint-Tropez with his partner Albin, the star of the show under the stage name Zaza. When Georges’s son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to Anne, the daughter of an ultraconservative politician, the two fathers are forced to pretend to be a “traditional” family to avoid scandal. Between misunderstandings and disguises, the comedy alternates humor, emotion and spectacular numbers, addressing themes such as identity, acceptance and unconditional love. This new Parisian production seeks to recapture the festive yet moving nature of the musical, while renewing its message for a contemporary audience. Laurent Lafitte brings to the stage an Albin who blends comic verve with humanity, while Olivier Py signs a staging that enhances costumes, set design and the cabaret atmosphere as a space of freedom and social reflection. La Cage aux Folles once again proves to be a work capable of combining entertainment with reflection, bringing to the stage with vitality the great themes of diversity and family.
