At the New National Theatre, Tokyo, a new production of the classical ballet Raymonda is being staged, set during the time of the Crusades with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Alexander Glazunov. The story follows the young Raymonda, niece of a countess, as she awaits the return of her beloved Jean de Brienne from the Crusades while the Saracen knight Abderachman tries to abduct her. The ensuing conflict and Jean’s victory lead to the couple’s grand wedding celebration. This production, first staged in 2004 with choreography and direction by Asami Maki, renews the classical ballet tradition with a modern, dynamic, and visually striking interpretation, enhanced by costumes and sets designed by Luisa Spinatelli.
