Hiroshi Sugimoto's photography
#Exhibitions

Internationally renowned Japanese photographer, Hiroshi Sugimoto has a long career behind him which has earned him numerous international awards for his works. The UCCA Center for Contemporary Art Beijing hosts his first institutional solo show in China, offering a selection of works from 1974 to today. With a large-format camera, mixing darkroom chemicals, and developing his gelatinous black-and-white prints by hand, Sugimoto explores in depth themes and practices of photography from the 19th century onwards, including dioramas, wax figures and architecture. In addition to key works from major photographic series such as Seascapes, Theaters, Lighting Fields and Portraits, the exhibition also presents a new series of calligraphic works to the public for the first time. These are works that highlight the artist's philosophical yet playful investigation into our understanding of time and memory, and the ambiguous character of photography as a medium suitable for both documentation and invention.
