Jannis Kounellis and the theatre
#Art

Jannis Kounellis, Greek by birth, Roman by adoption, liked to be called Gianni to reiterate his strong attachment to Italy. In art he was a pioneer of those researches that radically modified the relationship between the work and those who observe it, always leaving a profound trace: as a painter he managed to "get out of the picture", considering the space around him as a blank canvas to paint. MAXXI dedicates a tribute to the great Master by exhibiting 3 works strongly connected to that area of Kounellis' research centered on theatre. Works of extraordinary power and suggestiveness, characterized by a continuous tension between strength and precariousness and capable of establishing a profound relationship of empathy with the surrounding environment, an exhibition and scenic space at the same time. For example, in Senza titolo (Notte) from 1996, large black painted letters move in space and rest on the ground in an apparently precarious balance. The eye sees, even before reading and the dramatic charge strikes even before the mind recomposes the letters in the word "Night".
