At the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, from 17 September 2025 to 11 January 2026, the exhibition Soulages. Une autre lumière showcases Pierre Soulages’ works on paper. Assembled via exceptional loans from the Musée Soulages in Rodez and organized by Réunion des musées nationaux - Grand Palais, the show brings together about 130 works created between the 1940s and early 2000s, many of which have never or rarely been exhibited. Known worldwide for his large outrenoir canvases, Soulages reveals here a more intimate and spontaneous practice: ink, walnut stain, gouache, and acrylic interact with light in a direct, material gesture. The layout guides visitors through a chronological journey that highlights the coherence of a visual language based on contrasts between black and light, emphasizing paper not as a secondary medium but as a fully autonomous creative field. These sheets bear witness to Soulages’ art as an experience of action and thought - not as preparatory sketches but as works that challenge visual space, offering an alternative insight into his poetic practice and inviting reflection on the centrality of his graphic production. The exhibition reshapes the perception of Soulages, presenting him not only as the Master of black abstraction on canvas but also as an innovator in the realm of art on paper.
