Born in Rome in 1897 Antonio Donghi was an Italian painter, among the main exponents of Magical Realism. The exhibition at Palazzo Merulana presents over thirty works by Donghi, which come from important collections such as the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna di Roma, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna and Banca d'Italia and from the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation. The works brought together for the first time in a major retrospective trace the artist's entire career, touching on his main research themes: landscapes, still lifes, portraits, indoor and outdoor figures, circus and vaudeville characters. Three masterpieces which are part of the Cerasi Foundation - Washerwomen (1922-1923), Boat Trip (1934) and Little Saltimbanches (1938) - are the starting point for this exhibition which highlights the importance of this figurative artist on the Italian scene and reveal the beauty of his unreal, suspended, magical language.
