Rediscovering Van Eyck

Rediscovering Van Eyck
#Exhibitions

The Louvre presents an important exhibition dedicated to Jan van Eyck and his work Chancellor Rolin praying before the Virgin and Child (1435). Considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the famous Flemish painter, the work will be shown to the public for the first time after the important restoration work which aims to bring back the liveliness of the colors and details to this precious small oil on panel of just over 60 centimeters per side and which has been kept in the Louvre collections since its first foundation in 1805. The rediscovery of this painting will be enriched by comparison with other works by Van Eyck, but also by Rogier van der Weyden, Robert Campin and the great miniaturists of era. Around sixty painted plates, manuscripts, drawings, sculpted bas-reliefs and goldsmith objects will be brought together exceptionally, thanks to the support of numerous museums and institutions in France and abroad such as the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Royal Library of Brussels , the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
