The Biba phenomenon

The Biba phenomenon
#Exhibitions

Born in Warsaw, British citizen in the early 1950s, Barbara Hulanicki is one of the most creative minds of the Swinging London. In 1963 she set up a small shop in Kensington, which she quickly followed up with a mail order business of the same name which became renowned for its "elegantly decadent atmosphere". Biba was a meeting place for artists, film stars and musicians - including Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Marianne Faithfull - where a young clientele could purchase at affordable prices miniskirts, floppy felt hats, feather boas, velvet trouser suits and colorful unisex T-shirts. The exhibition displays a selection of clothing from the time, original photographs, films and archive materials, all personally chosen by Barbara Hulanicki, to tell the story of Biba, a brand that not only sold clothes but "an entire style of life".
