Crash / Crush: Art Reflects a World Shaped by Crisis

We live in an age where the exception has become the norm. Pandemics, wars, economic upheaval, and geopolitical tensions have profoundly altered the way we experience time, imagine the future, and even understand ourselves. This is the starting point of Crash / Crush, an exhibition bringing together 28 artists and collectives from China, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Georgia, and beyond to explore the visible and invisible scars of contemporary life. For curators Li Huiyi and Cao Liyao, the “accident” is no longer simply an unexpected event but the defining condition of the present. Crises and instability have become embedded in everyday life, reshaping our relationship with reality. Through installations, video, photography, and multimedia works, the exhibition looks beyond the traumatic event itself to examine the psychological pressure and inner transformations it leaves behind. The title plays on the dual meanings of Crash and Crush: collision, collapse, and catastrophe on one hand; emotional overwhelm, vulnerability, and desire on the other. More than an exhibition about accidents, Crash / Crush is a meditation on how contemporary reality has been fundamentally transformed - and on how art can still help us recognize that change and imagine new possibilities for action.
