The dialogue between Vincent van Gogh and Anselm Kiefer is the theme of this exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1962, 17-year-old Anselm Kiefer received a scholarship to follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps, starting in the Netherlands, passing through Belgium, Paris and Arles in the south of France. A journey and an encounter that would profoundly affect the German artist and have a lasting influence on Kiefer throughout his 60 years of artistic practice. A pioneer of Post-Impressionism, Vincent Van Gogh inspired the subjects and techniques of Kiefer’s monumental paintings and sculptures that draw on history, mythology, literature, philosophy and science. The exhibition is based on works by both artists, compared, side by side.
