The world premiere of Il Nome della Rosa, an opera based on the famous novel by Umberto Eco and commissioned to Francesco Filidei by the Teatro alla Scala together with the Paris Opera, marks a moment of great importance for contemporary music. Conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, the opera enters the international scene as a bold experiment in the musical translation of Eco's complex narrative. Filidei, in his third opera after Giordano Bruno and L'Inondation, constructs the score directly inspired by the structure of the novel, which Eco himself defined as a sort of "opera buffa". The composer develops a musical language that alternates arias and recitatives of Gregorian inspiration, intertwining them in a solid symphonic architecture. This choice strengthens the link with the medieval setting of the opera, evoking the charm and mystery of the Benedictine monastery in which the story takes place. On the occasion of the Scala performances, the Milano Musica festival will also pay homage to Filidei with a monographic edition dedicated to his production, testifying to the growing interest in his musical research. With this new commission, the Teatro alla Scala reaffirms its leading role in the diffusion of today’s music, promoting works that dialogue with the past and the present in a continuous game of references and innovations.
