In 2024 we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism. It was 15 April 1874 when what is today considered the first impressionist exhibition was inaugurated in Paris with the display of works by the most important creators of this movement. Artists who sought independence and wanted to transform the aesthetic and perceptive representation of reality through a new, revolutionary visual language. Here we find in fact some of the protagonists of that historic moment of change, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Sisley and Cézanne. To celebrate this anniversary, the Musée d'Orsay presents around 130 works and renews its gaze on this fundamental date, considered the day of the launch of the avant-garde. The “Paris 1874” exhibition traces the circumstances that led these artists to join forces and exhibit their works together. A selection of works that is compared with paintings and sculptures exhibited at the official Salon of the same year and which contributes to recreating the visual shock caused by the art of this small "clan of rebels" who laid the foundations of the history of Modern Art.
