Dewi Danu and Dewi Sri: the Goddesses of Earth and Fertility

Bali is full of myths and legends that have deep roots in the culture and tradition of the island. Among the most famous myths is that of Dewi Danu, goddess associated with water and fertility. According to legend, the Island of Bali had been hit by a prolonged drought which caused severe famine and suffering for the population. In answer to the prayers of the priests, Dewi Danu appeared, a beautiful goddess with the appearance of a wise and kind woman. She offered to control the waters and ensure the fertility of the rice fields. In return, she asked that a temple be dedicated to her and that people show respect and gratitude for her generosity. Thus was built the Ulun Danu Batur Temple on the shores of Lake Batur, dedicated to Dewi Danu. The lake became the realm of the goddess, and she is believed to watch over the waters and the fertility of the surrounding lands. Another important myth, always connected to nature, is that of Dewi Sri, the Balinese goddess of rice and fertility. It is said that the goddess appeared in a dream to a priest revealing that she was a prisoner of a demon and that for this reason the rice fields were dry. Only her prayers managed to free her and thus give prosperity to her harvest. Dewi Sri is depicted as a beautiful woman with a bundle of rice in her hands, a symbol of her connection to agriculture and abundance.
