Amid the folds of fabric, an almost forgotten elegance returns to the spotlight: the mamianqun, the skirt of Han tradition. Originating during the Song-Liao period and later spreading through the Ming and Qing dynasties, this garment has traversed the centuries and now, at the center of a dedicated exhibition, reveals anew its beauty and cultural significance. The exhibition presents a unique selection: mamianqun paired with contemporaneous jackets from the Ming Era to the early twentieth century, works rarely seen in person. The designs highlight the skirt’s sculptural effect - the flat central panel, pleated sides, and front and back openings carefully conceived to ease movement (and even horseback riding).-In recent years, the mamianqun has returned to prominence: young designers reinterpret it, blending traditional aesthetic grace with contemporary fashion. It is not merely a stylistic choice, but an act of rediscovering identity. This exhibition aims to convey not only the material elegance of the costume, but also the invisible thread that links past and present: a subtle line of aesthetics, memory, and culture in motion.
Today, the mamianqun is no longer just a historical artifact, but a bridge that brings ancient beauty into everyday life.
