From Antonio Vivaldi's Venice to Federico Fellini's Rome, passing through bel canto, opera and the unforgettable film scores of the twentieth century, Il Virtuoso Italiano. From Vivaldi to Cinecittà offers a musical journey spanning more than three centuries of Italian culture. Presented at the Théâtre du Châtelet on 26 February 2027, the concert transforms instrumental virtuosity into a celebration of Italy's rich artistic heritage. Leading the evening are cellist Christian-Pierre La Marca, joined by the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger. More than a conventional recital, the programme unfolds as a journey through the many identities of Italian music. Beginning with the Venetian Baroque of Antonio Vivaldi, the emblem of eighteenth-century virtuosity, it moves through nineteenth-century opera, chamber music and the European fascination with Italian style before arriving at the film music that made Cinecittà one of the world's great centres of cinematic imagination. Christian-Pierre La Marca, one of France's leading cellists, has built a career distinguished by artistic curiosity and a repertoire that crosses stylistic boundaries. In Il Virtuoso Italiano, the cello becomes the narrative thread linking different periods and musical languages, connecting Baroque concerto writing with Romantic lyricism and the evocative soundscapes of film music. Alongside masterpieces by Vivaldi, the programme includes composers representing other defining moments in Italy's musical tradition. The melodies of bel canto are placed in dialogue with the worlds of Monteverdi and Paganini, while the concert also embraces composers from outside Italy who found inspiration in its culture. Bellini's celebrated Casta Diva, for example, is paired with Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, illustrating how the ideal of Italian music has resonated throughout the European tradition. The final section of the evening is devoted to the golden age of Italian cinema. Music by Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone evokes the legendary world of Cinecittà, reminding audiences how Italian film scores became one of the defining voices of twentieth-century cinema. Here, virtuosity is never an end in itself but a storytelling device capable of connecting opera, the concert hall and the silver screen. With this programme, the Théâtre du Châtelet once again demonstrates its commitment to concerts that transcend traditional genres. Il Virtuoso Italiano is not simply an anthology of celebrated works, but a carefully crafted narrative in which the history of Italian music unfolds as a continuous evolution of forms, styles and artistic imagination. The result is a tribute to Italy not only as the birthplace of Baroque music and opera, but also as a creative force that has shaped European music and twentieth-century visual culture. From Vivaldi to Cinecittà, the programme reveals virtuosity as a way of telling the story of an entire nation.
