What can a body express when it appears, disappears and blends into its surroundings? This is the question at the heart of Gagosian Rome's exhibition dedicated to Francesca Woodman, one of the most captivating and influential photographers of the twentieth century. Bringing together around fifty photographs, many of them never shown before, the exhibition reveals the artist's extraordinary ability to transform photography into a visual narrative suspended between dream and reality. In Woodman's images, the body becomes part of the environment: it hides behind a curtain, is reflected in a mirror, or merges with walls, furniture and everyday objects. Inspired by Surrealism, she used simple elements, masks, seashells, fruit and glass, to create enigmatic photographs that invite viewers to imagine what cannot be seen. Italy played a special role in her artistic journey. She lived in Rome in the late 1970s, where she deepened her engagement with Surrealist ideas and created some of her most powerful works. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to rediscover an artist who, despite her remarkably short career, transformed photography into a space of poetry, mystery and an ongoing exploration of identity.
