The New National Theatre in Tokyo will host five performances of Johann Strauss II's operetta Die Fledermaus as part of the 2025-2026 season. The production is directed by Viennese director Heinz Zednik, a former tenor and Kammersänger at the Vienna State Opera, who has long crafted elegant stagings faithful to the authentic Viennese spirit. The musical direction is entrusted to Daniel Cohen, conducting the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Chorus of the New National Theatre. The principal cast includes Thomas Blondelle as Gabriel von Eisenstein, Sabina Cvilak as Rosalinde, and Daichi Fujiki as Prince Orlofsky. The ensemble is rounded out by Levent Bakirci as Frank, Tatsundo Ito as Alfred, Rafael Fingerlos as Dr. Falke, and Maria Chabounia as Adele. Die Fledermaus is considered the absolute masterpiece of Viennese operetta: a light and lively opera in three acts, sung in German with English and Japanese surtitles, punctuated by brilliant waltzes and polkas, plays on identity, disguises, and farcical situations. The plot revolves around Eisenstein's social and amorous misadventures and culminates in the grand ball at Prince Orlofsky's home, where misunderstandings and champagne set the stage for a finale marked by forgiveness and lightheartedness. Heinz Zednik's direction focuses on a refined production, with Art Deco-style sets by Olaf Zombeck, choreography by Maria Luise Jaska, and lighting design by Yuji Tatsuta.
