Louise Bourgeois and art as a guarantee of sanity

The Mori Art Museum is organizing Louise Bourgeois's first major museum exhibition in Japan in 27 years. Louise Bourgeois, born in 1911 in Paris, died fourteen years ago in New York, is considered one of the most important artists of the last century. Over the course of her prolific seventy-year career, she has translated emotional states through an infinity of materials, developing a diverse body of work that combines psychological intensity with extraordinary formal inventiveness. The exhibition will feature works from all phases of the artist's career, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, installations and writings. Among these, for the first time in East Asia, is a selection of paintings by Bourgeois, dating from 1938 to 1949. The exhibition also presents her works from her perhaps most representative spider series which explores the themes of maternal love, healing and memory.
