The New National Theatre in Tokyo hosts the return of The Kabuki, a choreographic masterpiece by Maurice Béjart, performed by the Tokyo Ballet Company. Inspired by the famous kabuki drama Kanadehon Chūshingura, the show tells the legendary story of the 47 rōnin, samurai who avenged the death of their lord in 18th-century Japan. Created in 1986 specifically for the Tokyo Ballet, The Kabuki represents an innovative fusion of Western classical dance and traditional Japanese theatre. The original music by Toshiro Mayuzumi, along with the set and costume designs by Nuno Corte-Real, contribute to creating a unique stage experience. The Kabuki is considered one of the cornerstones of the Tokyo Ballet Company’s repertoire and has achieved international success, with performances in 28 cities across 15 countries, including at the Palais Garnier, the Wiener Staatsoper, and La Scala. Its return to Tokyo offers an unmissable opportunity for enthusiasts of dance and Japanese culture.
