In the heart of the Museo di Roma in Trastevere, an intense and evocative exhibition brings to life the complex figure of Tina Modotti. Around sixty works - including photographs, letters, articles, and documents - reconstruct the personal and artistic journey of a woman who lived between two worlds, embodying the tensions and ideals of the 20th century. An actress in Hollywood, muse and partner of Edward Weston, Modotti became a photographer in post-revolutionary Mexico, where she merged avant-garde aesthetics with deep political commitment. Her images - stark still lifes, portraits of workers, scenes of everyday life - offer visual fragments of a society in upheaval, as well as the transformation of an artist into an activist. The works on display come from the prestigious Photographic Archive of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Pachuca, the largest Ibero-American photographic collection. Throughout the exhibition, Tina’s political trajectory is revealed: from joining the Mexican Communist Party to her European exile, from active involvement in the Spanish Civil War with the International Brigades to her secret return to Mexico. She died in Mexico City in 1942 at just 45. Today, her legacy is recognized as one of the most powerful voices of 20th-century social photography.
